Mental Health First Aid

Commerce City Rotary Club-Mental Health Initiative collaborates with Community Reach Center bringing Mental Health First Aid in English and Spanish to community stakeholders.

  • Mental Health First Aid DOES NOT teach people to be therapists.
  • Mental Health First Aid DOES teach a 5-step action plan to equip them to come to the aid of someone in crisis.
  • Mental Health First Aid: Be a FIRST RESPONDER  for your community’s Mental Health.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)…

  • Interactive 8-hour training course that presents an overview of mental illnesses and substance use disorders in the United States
  • Teaches an evidenced-based five-step action plan that are easy to follow with materials for non-clinicians to understand interventions and help an individual who may be experiencing a mental health issue
  • Topics covered include: anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including ADHD) and eating disorders
  • Provides knowledge to help individuals in crisis, similar to CPR for the body; MHFA is for the brain

MHFA Youth & Adult Leader…

  • Designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge or is in crisis
  • Teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations

MHFA Veterans & Military…

  • Why MHFA for Veterans, service members, and their families…
    • While military service often fosters resilience in individuals and families, some service members may experience mental health or substance use challenges
    • Thirty percent (30%) of active duty and reserve military personnel deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan have a mental health condition requiring treatment – approximately 730,000 men and women, with many experiencing post-traumatic stress syndrome/post traumatic stress disorders (PTSS/PTSD) and depression
    • Sadly, less than 50% of returning veterans in need receive any mental health treatment.  The Veterans Administration reports that approximately 22 veterans die by suicide every day
  • Course assists family members and personnel working with military and families who are often not aware of how to engage veterans with mental illnesses and addictions
  • In addition to the impact of military service on the veteran, each has a circle of family and friends who are also impacted by their military service
